Pelvic Floor: Not Just a Women’s Issue

by Dr. Sarah Joy Stuckart, PT, DPT, CD

You may have seen online posts about how women should do kegels to help their pelvic floors. It’s great that people are starting to think about this important group of muscles, but the information most people get is pretty limited. Did you know that EVERYONE has a pelvic floor? That’s right, people of all genders and all ages have a pelvic floor. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles in the bottom of your pelvis, spanning from your pubic bone to your tailbone, and to your sit bone on each side. It makes up part of your core muscles! There are multiple layers of the pelvic floor, with multiple muscles making up each layer.

These muscles have a lot of different jobs! They have to squeeze to hold urine and stool, help with balance, and support your core. They also have to be able to relax for using the toilet and sexual activity. If they’re having trouble squeezing, relaxing, knowing when to do what, or coordinating with the other deep core muscles, we can start to see issues in any of these different functions.

Pelvic physical therapy is for everybody and every body. We can help men dealing with erectile dysfunction. We can help trans individuals considering bottom surgery. We can help kids experiencing bed-wetting. And we can help anyone dealing with leakage, constipation, pelvic pain, sexual pain/dysfunction, back/hip pain, or pregnancy concerns. We also promise not to just tell you to do kegels, because we know that the pelvic floor has multiple functions and needs to do more than just squeeze.
